Santa Monica College recently hosted an inaugural Men of Color Leadership Conference under the theme “Agents of Change” to holistically support all minority male students enrolled in the California Community College system.
Workshops throughout the conference Friday focused on the men’s academic and post-grad success. There were sessions on leadership development, managing relationships and access to mentorship and networking opportunities, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press.
“Too often we look at the deficiency in outcomes of men of color in community colleges but this conference helped us strengthen our sense of belonging, resiliency, code-switching, and helped us shift our mindset,” said Cesar Jimenez, associate dean of counseling and student success at El Camino College.
The Men of Color Leadership Conference concluded with a film screening of director Frank Dawson’s “Agents of Change.”
