HBCU Initiative Based in Education Secretary’s Office

HBCU Initiative Based in Education Secretary’s Office

The White House Initiative on HBCUs has a new base of operations — just down the hall from Education Secretary Roderick Paige.
Education Department officials say the higher profile for the initiative is a reflection of the administration’s commitment to Black colleges. Previously, the White House Initiative was housed in the department’s Office of Post-Secondary Education.
The new change places the initiative squarely in the Office of the Secretary. A department spokesman said the new location will give initiative staff closer day-to-day contact with Paige. Leonard H.O. Spearman is executive director of the White House initiative. A spokesman announced the new arrangement shortly before the start of the initiative’s two-day conference in Washington last month. For more information, contact Spearman at (202) 401-4389.
