Boston University Engineer Recognized
BOSTON
Dr. James E. Hubbard Jr., senior systems engineer at the Boston University Photonics Center, has been awarded the 2002 Black Engineer President’s Award for Career Excellence. The honor is given to engineers who have distinguished themselves both in their disciplines and by accomplishments contributing to society as a whole. The Council of Engineering Deans of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Lockheed Martin and DaimlerChrysler participate in administering the award.
Hubbard, who is the founder and chief technology officer of iProvica Inc., is one of the developers of the field of smart structures. IProvica provides low-cost, portable and tether-free products for health-care facilities that monitor patients’ activities and vital signs. The Boston-based company is using the facilities of the Photonics Center at Boston University through its participation in the Center’s Business Acceleration Program.
IProvica’s patented technology, SmartSkin, transforms beds, wheelchairs, cribs, shoes and clothes into sensing systems that can track a patient’s physical and respiratory movement and can alert health providers in the event of an emergency.
