Former Shaw University President to Lead Freedom Center in Ohio

CINCINNATI — A former college president and divinity dean will lead the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

Clarence “C.G.” Newsome will serve as president of the museum and information center along the Ohio River downtown. The center will celebrate its 10th anniversary next year.

Newsome has more than 20 years of experience in academic and nonprofit leadership. He is a former president of Shaw University and former dean of Howard University’s School of Divinity.

The Cincinnati center has had to overcome financial struggles. A merger last year with the Cincinnati Museum Center has enabled it to cut operating costs and achieve a balanced budget while increasing its endowment.

Newsome is a 63-year-old native of Ahoskie, N.C., who played football for Duke University.

He succeeds Kim Robinson, who retired.
