Ex-SC State Board Member Facing Charges in Federal Investigation

COLUMBIA S.C.—A former South Carolina State University trustee is facing new charges in a federal investigation into public corruption.

An indictment unsealed Thursday shows prosecutors are pursuing dozens of charges accusing Jonathan Pinson of racketeering, wire fraud, money laundering and making false statements to investigators.

Pinson was arrested earlier this year and accused of taking kickbacks for allegedly trying to get the university to buy land from a Florida developer in exchange for a Porsche SUV.

The new charges come a day after another former university board member pleaded guilty to bank fraud and conspiracy. Prosecutors would not say if that case was related to Pinson’s but did say they got information from wiretaps.

The government has said it tapped Pinson’s phone in 2011. His attorney did not immediately comment.
