Judge: UNC-Wilmington Must Pay $700K for Professor’s Legal Fees

WILMINGTON, N.C. ― A North Carolina public university is being ordered to pay more than $700,000 in legal fees for a professor denied promotion because of his conservative Christian views.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports that U.S. District Judge Malcolm Howard ruled Tuesday in a case that pit associate criminology professor Mike Adams against the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Adams sued after saying he was denied promotion to full professor. Adams said the university retaliated after his political and social views changed with his conversion from atheism to Christianity.

A federal jury in Greenville decided in his favor in March. Howard ordered UNCW to promote Adams to full professor with future pay and benefits dating back to 2007.

UNCW said after the jury verdict that it will consider its options.
