Private Va college names first black president

FARMVILLE, Va. (AP) – Christopher B. Howard has been named president of Hampden-Sydney College.

Howard will be the first African-American to serve as president of the private all-male college near Farmville. He will succeed Walter M. Borz III.

Borz announced in May that he would step down June 30.

Hampden-Sydney’s board of trustees appointed Howard on Friday.

Howard is now vice president for leadership and strategic initiatives at the University of Oklahoma.
