Gray-Little has been the chancellor of the University of Kansas since 2009. Previously, she was a professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she also held several top administrative posts, including executive vice chancellor and provost. She is vice chair of the board of trustees for the Online Computer Library Center, Inc. Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at a White House summit on math and science education in 2010.
