The AMERICAN BAR ENDOWMENT, a nonprofit sponsor of group insurance and charitable giving programs for the more than 400,000 members of the American Bar Association, has donated $3.7 MILLION to improve the ABA Fund for Justice and Education.
The CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY and the regents of the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA have received $7.5 MILLION from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for the development of a thirty-meter telescope. A telescope of this size would allow astronauts to analyze the light from the first stars born after the Big Bang, see planets around nearby stars and test some fundamental laws of physics.
CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY-SAN BERNADINO has received $122,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to create a new Asian studies minor at the institution. This grant is part of the federal government’s effort to bolster international studies and foreign language development.
INDIANA UNIVERSITY AT BLOOMINGTON researchers have received $1.96 MILLION from the National Science Foundation to develop research to understand the current and future state of the polar ice caps.
A collaborative study by LINCOLN UNIVERSITY (Pa.), PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE and the UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA received a $4.2 MILLION grant from the Center for Excellence in Environmental Toxicology at the University of Pennsylvania. The collaborative effort will study gene/environment interactions that increase the risk of lung cancer in Black and White smokers and nonsmokers. About 10 percent of lung cancer cases occur in nonsmokers.
STANFORD UNIVERSITY’S GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS (Calif.) has received a $105 MILLION gift from Nike founder and chairman Phil Knight. The school will use $100 million to help fund the construction of a new campus for the school, which will be named after Knight. The other $5 million will be used to match faculty endowment gifts.
The UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT SAN DIEGO’S SCHOOL OF MEDICINE has received a $1 MILLION grant from the California Telemedicine & eHealth Center to support the creation of a Southern California Telemedicine Learning Center.
The UNIVERSITY OF OREGON received its largest ever gift of $100 MILLION from Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny. Although the donation is not targeted for anything specific, some of the funds will be used to build a new basketball arena and to create the Oregon Athletics Legacy Fund, which will support all athletic programs.
The UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT EL PASO received a $5 MILLION grant from the National Science Foundation for its Cyber-ShARE Center of Excellence, which will help researchers and educators around the globe share information and advance their work.
