Illinois State University compromises, students won’t fail for wearing flip-flops

NORMAL Ill.

Flip-flops and jeans will no longer mean a failing grade for marketing students at Illinois State University.

Marketing department officials and student leaders say they’ve reached a compromise on a dress code that reduces penalties given to students not dressed in business-casual attire.

Professors can dock points for casual clothes. But they can no longer dismiss students from class and give them zero credit for the day’s work.

A maximum of ten percent of the student’s grade is now tied to “overall professional behavior,” including attire, tardiness or disruptive behavior.

The policy is subject to the discretion of professors, who say they’d been trying to prepare students for the professional world.
