CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, BAKERSFIELD, has received a $250,000 gift from State Farm Insurance for an advanced computer lab. The lab will be located in the university’s new science building.
FRESNO STATE UNIVERSITY (Calif.) has received $1.75 MILLION in grants from Rehabilitation Administration Services in the U.S. Department of Education. Specifically, the funds will go to the Rehabilitation Counseling Program in the Kremen School of Education and Human Development and provide two student scholarships in job development and placement, vocational evaluation and work adjustment and general rehabilitation counseling.
THE GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY has received a five-year, $5 MILLION grant from Media Power Inc. for augmented reality research. Georgia Tech’s GVU Center in the College of Computing will use the funds to envision, prototype and evaluate the next generation of mobile augmented reality games and entertainment applications. Media Power will also provide the center hardware and development tools.
SIERRA COLLEGE’S (Calif.) work force development and continuing education division has received a $600,000 grant from the California Community College System. The funds will allow the main campus of the college in Rocklin, Calif., to expand career technical education and build connections between community college programs and secondary schools in the region.
The UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO has received a $5 MILLION gift from an anonymous family for the development of future programs in particle physics in its Fermilab, the only lab in the nation fully devoted to this field.
The UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO AT DENVER has received a $76 MILLION grant from National Institutes of Health to create a statewide network of research, health care and community facilities.
The UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME (Ind.) has received a $20 MILLION gift from alumnus Frank E. Eck to support the Center for Global Health and Infectious Diseases. The research program will be renamed in honor of the Eck family.
The UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA has received a $200,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to study Wii habilitation. The USC project will study how interactive games on consoles such as Nintendo’s Wii can improve public health and the health care profession.
The UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH CENTER IN SAN ANTONIO has received a five-year, $26 MILLION grant from the National Institutes of Health to more quickly develop applicable treatments from medical discoveries.
