AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE (Texas) has received a $35,305 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission for 68 scholarships for two camps that provide students handson experience in computer programming and design. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, FRESNO has received a $260,000 grant from Worldwide, HP for the Lyles College of Engineering to receive wireless tablet personal computers, wide-format printers and remote-access work stations. The Community College Research Center (CCRC) at Teachers College, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY (N.Y.) has been awarded a $5 MILLION gift from the Gates Foundation to research ways in which community colleges can increase their graduation rates. OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY has received a $14,453 grant from the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges to support “Catch-A-Ride,” a minority recruitment program. OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY (Va.) Has received a $661,154 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to create the Children and Youth Services Center. NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY (Va.) Has received a $100,000 grant from Wal-Mart to serve the needs of first-generation college students. NORTH CAROLINA A&T STATE UNIVERSITY has received a $450,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for the university’s Waste Management Institute. The James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center at SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY has received a $48,000 grant from Senior Options, Inc., a senior care facility, to conduct a transportation feasibility study for Laurens County.SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY has received a $1.5 MILLION grant from the National Institute on Aging to study Alzheimer’s disease. The UNITED NEGRO COLLEGE FUND (Va.) Has received a $508,781 gift from the estate of the late Faye Crawford Bremond for scholarships or fellowships in her name for students at her alma mater, Huston-Tillotson University. The UNIVERSITY OF IOWA has been awarded a $3.6 MILLION grant from the National Institutes of Health for research to understand the genes and disease processes involved in glaucoma.
