Norfolk State Under Watch By Accrediting Agency

RICHMOND Va.—Norfolk State University’s accrediting agency plans to review the school to determine whether it should be sanctioned for accreditation-related issues.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges sent a letter to Norfolk State President Tony Atwater concerning the review last week.

In the letter, the commission said it found evidence of what it called significant accreditation-related issues. They include concerns about the university’s financial accountability.

Atwater tells the newspaper that the university welcomes the review. But he called the letter “tentative” and subject to change.

Norfolk State Rector Thomas N. Chewning says the review is important. He declined further comment.
