Founded in 1909, the University of Maine at Machias (UMM) is a member college of the University of Maine System, specializing in a curriculum that interprets the traditional liberal arts education through an environmental and sustainability lens. UMM is one of only a few colleges in the United States with an environmental liberal arts (ELA) academic program. Serving approximately 1,000 students, UMM offers 1 faculty member for every 13 students and prides itself on a hands-on personalized education.
Dean of Students and Admissions Melvin Adams guides UMM’s Division of Student Affairs. Adams oversees 1 parttime and 13 full-time staff members in addition to a number of functional areas, including: admissions, counseling and consultation services, fraternity and sorority life, student conduct, and multicultural student services, among others. UMM’s Division of Student Affairs strives to provide students with transformational co-curricular opportunities, instilling values of civic responsibility, sustainability and respect for all.
As Adams shares, “It is an honor to receive this recognition from a highly respected and innovative organization — American College Personnel Association.” He continues, “Our Student Affairs staff is exemplary in numerous ways. They are committed to student empowerment, creation of diverse learning opportunities, and engagement with students to explore the true meaning of diversity and inclusion. It is an honor to work with an innovative and dedicated group of professionals.”
Celebrating Dr. Adams and the student affairs professionals under his supervision, Dr. Joyce Hedlund, president of UMM, shares, “Certainly UMM is putting its best foot forward and the Student Affairs Division is achieving great success.” The personal attention provided to students and student affairs professionals is part of what makes the University of Maine at Machias one of the Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs at Baccalaureate and Liberal Arts Institutions.
