The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), known as an “Honor’s University in Maryland,” remains an innovative leader in higher education. Through their cutting-edge research and excellence in teaching, UMBC offers academically talented students a strong undergraduate liberal arts foundation that prepares them for graduate and professional study, entry into the workforce, and community service and leadership.
UMBC’s Division of Student Affairs is led by Vice President Nancy Young. Young provides oversight to the division’s 192 full-time and 1,083 part-time staff members across a number of departments, including the Office of Student Judicial Programs, residential life, off-campus student services, and the Office of Student Life, to name a few.
Student affairs at UMBC is guided by the mission of facilitating learning and preparing students for success in a multicultural and increasingly global society and workforce. Specifically, three primary objectives guide the student affairs curriculum offered by the division: student learning-cognition; student learning-interpersonal and practical competence; and delivery of quality services and programs.
When informed of UMBC’s selection to this year’s list, Young expressed, “At UMBC we believe that each person has a unique story that drives her passion or allows him to contribute new perspectives to our shared community. In our division of student affairs, counselors, bus drivers, community directors, maintenance staff , club advisers, judicial officers, nurses, coaches and staff from multiple and seemingly dissimilar departments are united by a shared passion for facilitating learning and working with students to prepare them for success in and after college. Colleagues frequently tell me that our outcome-focused, inclusive and caring community is what first attracted them to UMBC (and is the reason they stay). We are pleased to be included in this impressive list and, equally important, we appreciate the opportunity to stop and reflect on why we love it here!”
The Division of Student Affairs embodies a true commitment to teamwork and community, while cultivating student development and growth; this is all of what makes UMBC a Most Promising Place to Work in Student Affairs at Research Institutions.
