UVa Attorney Wanted ‘Jackie’ to disavow Rolling Stone story

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ― A University of Virginia attorney asked a student who claimed in a Rolling Stone story that she was gang-raped to disavow the article after it was published.

The Washington Post reports that the university had wanted the woman identified only as “Jackie” to release a statement saying the 2014 story “A Rape on Campus” did “not accurately reflect” what she told author Sabrina Rubin Erdely. The proposed statement said Jackie didn’t tell anyone at the university that she was gang- raped on that date in the Phi Kappa Psi house.

The statement was never signed by Jackie. Its existence was revealed this week during testimony in the $7.5 million defamation lawsuit that university administrator Nicole Eramo filed against the magazine, claiming the article made her its “chief villain.”
