Education in Spite of It All: A Black Womanâs Journey
My mother, Dr. Mildred Pratt, died in 2012. I think about her often. She was one of the first-generation of Black women to become a full professor at a predominantly White institution. When she became a full professor in the 1970s, Black women represented 1 percent of all full professors. As of 2016, Black women, like me, represent 2 percent of all full professors. In fact, out of all the full-time faculty in degree-granting postsecondary institutions, Black women only represent 3 percent of all faculty. We need more.

Zombies in the Academy
This yearâs Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) conference was exciting for me for two reasons. First, the theme âEnvisioning the Woke Academy,â was brought to life by two scholars whom I admire, Drs. Lori Patton Davis and D-L Stewart. Second, this was my first ASHE conference. As a second-year doctoral student in the Higher Education Leadership program at Colorado State University, I could not contain my enthusiasm to hear from the same scholars I read in class â those who have helped me expand my critical thinking and knowledge base.

When Hate Speech and Free Speech Collide
Hundreds of hate incidents have taken place on college campuses over the past two years, from nooses hung on trees to a 77 percent increase in White supremacist propaganda during the 2017-18 school year. Anti-Semitic acts have seen a particular surge in the past month, as swastikas have been carved in pumpkins, stamped in the snow, and painted on a Jewish professorâs office walls, to name just a few examples.

The Reality of Meeting Hate Speech with âMore Speechâ
On the one year anniversary of the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, it seemed important to reflect on how we, as concerned citizens, can and have responded to the continued existence of hate in our communities.

White Supremacy: Get Out the Way
Some might describe Ludacrisâs (2001) song, âMove Bitchâ as an anthem of fight, strength, and resistance. Others might describe the song as bold, vulgar, and direct. I use the title to describe a recent experience I had working in higher education that forced me to resign from my position and the institution that employed me.

When Changing a Schoolâs Name Is a Lesson in History and Progress
In 1971, I was a fifth-grade student at J.E.B. Stuart Elementary School in Richmond, Va. My younger brother and sister and I left our home in the morning and walked the leafy avenues to the two-story brick building with the handsome rotunda greeting us on arrival. I donât know if it was triumphant or tragic that we got to go to a school named for a racist Confederate general, but I do know it never should have come to be.

A Teacher, a Double Identity, Hatred and Justice Advocacy
A recent exclusive story on Huffington Post.com was a detailed exposé about Dayanna Volitich, a 25-year-old social studies teacher at Crystal River Middle School in Florida who turns out to be a White supremacy advocate and has been removed from the classroom pending an investigation of radical views she has espoused.

We Donât Have a âDiversityâ Problem in Education
We do not have a diversity problem. What we have is a diversity symptom. Institutionalized White supremacy is the problem.
