Vermont State College Seeks to Increase Completion Rate

WATERBURY, Vt. ― Fewer than half of Vermont’s high school graduates go on to get college degrees, and the Vermont State College system is trying to find ways to change that and make sure those who do go on to college complete it.

MARGARET MCKENNA

MARGARET MCKENNA has been appointed president of Suffolk University, effective this summer. She is a visiting professor and acting director of the Sillerman Center for the Advancement of Philanthropy at Brandeis University, and president emerita of Lesley University. McKenna earned a bachelor’s from Emmanuel College and a juris doctor from Southern Methodist University.

JOEL PÉREZ has been appointed vice president and dean of students at Whittier College. He was dean of students for community life at Seattle Pacific University. Pérez earned a bachelor’s from Biola University, a master’s from Azusa Pacific University and a doctorate from Claremont Graduate University.

GRETCHEN HOLBROOK GERZINA

GRETCHEN HOLBROOK GERZINA has been appointed dean of the Commonwealth Honors College at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, effective July 15. She was chair of the department of African and African-American studies, a professor of English and Kathe Tappe Vernon Professor of Biography at Dartmouth College. Gerzina earned a bachelor’s from Marlboro College, a master’s from Simmons College and a doctorate from Stanford University.

KINA MALLARD has been named president of Reinhardt University in Waleska, Georgia. She was executive vice president and provost at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Mallard earned a bachelor’s from Middle Tennessee State University, and a master’s and a doctorate from the University of Tennessee.

Cristina M. Rodriguez was named the Leighton Homer Surbeck Professor of Law at Yale Law School. She was a professor of law at Yale. Rodriguez earned a bachelor’s and a juris doctor from Yale. She also earned a master’s from Oxford University.

Claudia Emerson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, died early Thursday morning at age 57 after a long battle with cancer, the university said.
