2021 Emerging Scholars: Dr. Krystal L. Williams
By her own account, Dr. Krystal L. Williams admittedly took an “indirect route” to her post as an assistant professor in the College of Education at The University of Alabama.

Will the Election of Joe Biden Put Higher Education Back at Center Stage?
The 2020 election season has brought higher education — and, in particular, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) — back to the forefront of the conversation. Recognizing how critically important these institutions and their students and alumni are to the Democratic base, President-elect Joe Biden unveiled a $70 billion plan to support HBCUs. The plan focuses primarily on investing in infrastructure and research capacity for the institutions, but it also promises expansion to the federal Pell Grant program and broad student debt relief.

Focusing on First-Generation Students in College Admissions
To my fellow selective college admissions deans, I am asking for a mindset shift. We must stop being receivers of applications. We started in this work as admissions counselors, taught to counsel students to find the right path. Somewhere along the way to our seats at the top, we got complacent. We got comfortable. It didn’t happen overnight, but it happened. We stopped counseling and started receiving.

COVID-19 Testing: The Key to Keeping Students, Staff, Campus, and Community Safe
One of the great strengths of a college campus is the free flow of people and ideas. Students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and locations add to the unique tapestry of each individual institution. Human interaction, whether in a classroom, a lab, or even just the cafeteria adds immeasurably to the collective community experience.

Higher Education’s Obsession With Conferences Put to the Test
Last Spring, I was excited to attend the annual meeting for one of large professional organizations in my field. It was set to take place in a city I’d never visited, and I don’t have the time or resources as a graduate student to travel, so this was a great opportunity. My mentor and I were invited to present a paper at the conference which meant I had access to funding from my university to go. Having attended another large conference the previous fall, I had a pretty good idea about the expenses related. Thankfully, I didn’t need to get new formal wear, but I did have to figure out how to pay for everything else. Yes, I had a spreadsheet.

No Longer Participating in Our Own Oppression
Every day, institutions of higher education ask marginalized people to participate in their own oppression. Maybe it’s time we stop. We are asked to represent diversity, but we are not given meaningful seats at the tables of power. We are told to meet (or exceed) the same metrics as our straight White male colleagues, but, even when we do, the institution betrays us.

A Work of Heart: Practicing Critical Compassionate Pedagogy in the Face of Adversity
As a faculty member, my biggest concern was the online (re)creation of a deeply engaged and rich environment, while simultaneously supporting students battling various challenges due to COVID-19 including but not limited to the loss of jobs, mental health conditions, and deaths of family members.

Sallie Mae Fund, the charitable arm of private student lender Sallie Mae, said on Thursday it will contribute $4.5 million over the next three years to promote diversity in higher education. “Systemic racism, discrimination, and oppression of African Americans and communities of color have gone on too long. It’s not enough to acknowledge that there’s […]

Pledging to Disrupt Systemic Racism in Higher Education Advocacy
I have sat uncomfortably on raised chairs during enough panels with only other White speakers. I have rolled my eyes at enough invitations to events on education issues for which only White people would share their views. I have witnessed enough higher education researchers and advocates who make their living on equity work perpetuate cycles of mistreatment of graduate students and early-career colleagues.

Can the Racial and Economic Justice Movement Help Advance Equity in Higher Education?
While still not universally embraced, there is a growing recognition that the Black Lives Matter movement cannot be ignored. This acknowledgement by some of the most unlikely individuals and institutions, like the National Football League, is a sign that change is afoot.

It’s Time for Higher Education Institutions to Stop Ignoring Protests Against Systemic Police Violence
As higher education institutions often pride themselves on being “welcoming for all”, it is difficult to accept this as truth while ignoring the plight of Black Americans who come from areas where police violence is frequent and normalized.
