Faculty of Color Confront Extra Obstacles on the Road to Tenure
Dr. Paul C. Harris, an education professor at the University of Virginia, was offered promotion from assistant to associate professor, but – despite positive feedback up until the decision was made – he didn’t get tenure. Harris, who researches college readiness and Black male athlete identity, shared his story on Wednesday’s Diverse Talk Live webcast, followed by a panel discussion about the obstacles minority scholars face on their road to tenure.

A Message to Educators: Hygiene, Hand Washing, and Cultural Considerations Before, During, and After Health Crises
Like medical and mental health professionals, educators who are ignorant and incompetent relative to culture (especially those other than their own) can and have been harmful by contributing to school-based racialized trauma. ‘Do no harm’ must not be tossed aside like old news and discarded like trash when teaching, counseling, and delivering other health services. Doing so is a disgrace to the education profession and an affront to Black and other culturally different students, families, and communities.

In Defense of Affirmative Action
The most recent battle in the war against affirmative action is being brought by Students for Fair Admissions against Harvard University. What is striking about the Harvard case is — unlike previous suits which involved White plaintiffs — this suit is being brought on behalf of its Asian American members who claim they were denied admission to Harvard due to their race. Will this be the battle that finally brings down affirmative action?
