Northwestern’s New Black Studies Doctoral Program
As campus coordinator for the
“And Northwestern Makes Seven’” Diverse, Aug. 24

UNCF-Mellon Undergraduate

Fellowship Program (a component of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate
Fellowship Program), I meet and consult with young people interested in earning a doctorate and teaching at the college level. Northwestern’s new doctoral program (including its bidding strategy that brought Darlene Clark Hine to the faculty), signals to undergraduates and faculty members that Black studies can lead to “marketable” skills. Spelman College continues to develop a minor in Africana studies. Northwestern’s new program will provide fuel to support the
minor and a major!
