For her fourth novel, Golden tackles the complex web of emotions
that a family experiences when a member emerges from prison. Told in
the voices of the three survivors of a family tragedy — adult daughter
Theresa, her artist father Ryland, and accountant turned ex-con mother
Lena — the book treads across landscape that is all too familiar for
many African Americans.
