Dr. Robert Z. Carr Jr., dean of the School of Education and Psychology, led Alcorn State through the accreditation process.Alcorn State University is the first Historically Black College and University and the only institution of higher learning in the state of Mississippi to receive accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
Authorized by the U.S. Department of Education, CAEP is the accrediting body for schools, colleges and departments of education. The agency determines which schools, colleges and departments of education meet rigorous national standards in preparing new and experienced teachers and other school specialists for the classroom and/or other P-12 service.
“Achieving CAEP accreditation is a validation of the commitment that Alcorn has made in providing the rigorous educator preparation programs required for our students to achieve academic and employment success,” said Dr. Robert Z. Carr Jr., dean of the School of Education and Psychology.
Carr led the accreditation process, which included a self-study and a site visit to campus by CAEP representatives.
Alcorn’s president, Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr., said that accreditation by CAEP is confirmation of the university’s long-term commitment to producing future teachers.
“Alcorn State University is proud of the quality of its educational leaders who facilitate learning in America’s classrooms,” said Rankin. “We are pleased that our legacy now includes this prominent recognition.”
