The historically Black Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida, is set to become a university after it received more than it expected in state funding, reported The Florida Times-Union.

The 2020-2021 state legislative budget allocated an additional $3.5 million to Edward Waters, bringing total funding to $6.4 million. With the enhanced funding, the college will financially support students who need it. The institution will also add undergraduate programs as well as its first master’s program, in business administration.
“This is truly transformative,” said Dr. A. Zachary Faison Jr., president of Edward Waters College, at a recent news conference. “Many students who come to [Edward Waters] do not drop out, they stop out, due to financial hardships and difficulties. This additional support will help lessen that unfortunate trend.”
