Tribal Colleges Receive Department of Defense Funds
By Charles Dervarics

Thirteen tribal colleges will gain new funds from the Pentagon under a program designed for Black colleges and other minority-serving institutions.

The 13 colleges will receive $3.3 million under the Department of Defense’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions Infrastructure Support Program, which is designed to help colleges and universities improve their offerings in scientific areas critical for the military. Individual awards will range from $55,000 to $400,000.

Recipients include Oglala Lakota College in South Dakota for a math instructional improvement program; Sinte Gleska University, also in South Dakota, for distance learning; and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in New Mexico for a science and engineering program.
