Ex-University of Southern California Professor Fined for Grant Application Lie

LOS ANGELES ― A former University of Southern California math professor has been ordered to pay $300,000 in fines and restitution for lying about his employment on a grant application he made to the U.S. Department of Energy.

City News Service reported Monday that a judge also placed Alexander Tartakovsky on two years of probation.

Tartakovsky must also spend 250 hours teaching math to minority and learning-disabled students.

The former professor pleaded guilty in October to falsely claiming that his primary employer was his company, Argo Science Corp., when he applied for a $99,999 research grant in 2009.

His main employer was actually USC, where he worked full-time until 2012.

Federal officials said they would not have awarded the grant if they knew that.
