What’s In A Name?

Occidental College Pro-fessor Elizabeth Chin doesn’t shy away from controversial names for her classes, so perhaps it’s not surprising that conservatives labeled her “un-American” after learning of her sociology course entitled, “The Unbearable Whiteness of Barbie: Race & Popular Culture in the U.S.” The Young America’s Foundation, a right-wing student group, criticized the class, as did several conservative Web sites. Chin says her courses will be less provocatively titled this school year. “I’m teaching a course in the spring that I wanted to call ‘Why School Sucks,’ she tells Diverse. “But I opted for ‘Disciplines of Learning’ instead.”
