First Lady Dr. Jill Biden said that two years of tuition-free community college will not be included in any social spending bill Democrats may try to pass in Congress.
The remarks came at the Community College National Legislative summit in Washington D.C. on Monday. Biden teaches English and writing and Northern Virginia Community College.
“One year ago, I told this group that Joe was going to fight for community colleges,” said Biden. “But Joe has also had to make compromises. Congress hasn’t passed the Build Back Better agenda—yet—and free community college is no longer a part of that package.”
The first lady went on to add her deep disappointment and affirm she and the president’s commitment to making tuition free at community colleges. President Biden has promised to meet the goal by the end of his first term.
