PROVIDENCE, R.I. ― Brown University officials have asked a federal court judge to dismiss a lawsuit alleging gender bias brought by a male student who was suspended after being accused of sexual assault.
The Providence Journal reports the Ivy League university’s attorney, Steven Richard, argued that the student’s complaint is “overwrought” with innuendo and doesn’t demonstrate intentional gender bias as required under Title IX.
The student, identified as John Doe in court documents, was found responsible for misconduct and was suspended 2 ½ years after a female student accused him of fondling her and kissing her following an October 2014 dormitory party.
The lawsuit claims the student was subjected to unfair disciplinary processes that show “gender bias against males in cases involving allegations of sexual misconduct.”
