Sellers received a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College, where he also served as student body president, and received a J.D. from the University of South Carolina.

In 2006, Sellers made history when he won an election against a longtime incumbent state representative and, at the age of 22, became the youngest member of the South Carolina Legislature and youngest African-American elected official in the country, according to The Augusta Chronicle.

In 2014, Sellers was the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor for the state.

During the 2008 presidential election, Sellers served on President Barack Obama’s South Carolina steering committee.
