University of Maryland University College is undergoing a name change and will now be known as University of Maryland Global Campus. According to UMGC, the efforts to transition to the new name will continue into next year as the new UMGC name and logo are placed on its website and other materials beginning this fall.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan signed legislation to change UMUC’s name to University of Maryland Global Campus on April 18. According to UMGC, the new name more accurately conveys the institution’s public mission and global reach.
“The name University of Maryland Global Campus affirms both our roots as a respected public institution in the state of Maryland and our global footprint,” said UMGC President Javier Miyares. “It better reflects who we are today as we seek to broaden our reach in a highly competitive national landscape, thus keeping tuition low for Maryland students and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the university.”
University of Maryland Global Campus was founded more than 70 years ago specifically to serve the higher education needs of adult students in the workforce and the U.S. military. Presently, UMUC continues to serve that population of students online and offers more than 90 degrees, certificates, and specializations.
