Chowan to join CIAA football conference in 2008

MURFREESBORO N.C.

Chowan will join the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association as a football-only member beginning next season, school and league officials said Monday.

“Chowan University is thrilled at the opportunity to become a part of the CIAA football culture,” president M. Christopher White said.

Chowan, a private Baptist school with an enrollment of about 900, has been an independent since moving to Division II two years ago and joins the country’s oldest conference for historically black colleges and universities. Chowan is located in the northeast North Carolina city of Murfreesboro, near CIAA member Elizabeth City State.

“Our vision for the CIAA is to grow all aspects of the conference including educational synergies, athletic competition and to create a dynamic mixture of culture, history and geographic relevance,” conference commissioner Leon G. Kerry said. “We feel that Chowan University joining our football program is a great step on that path.”
