Just the Stats: What Public HBCU Coaches Are Paid, Part II

Last week, Diverse provided the results of a survey we conducted earlier this year on the compensation and salary packages of head coaches football at public historically Black colleges and universities.

Thirty-three of the 47 public HBCUs responded to the survey, a statistically significant 70 percent. A full analysis was conducted for football and women’s and men’s basketball. This week, we present to you the findings on men’s and women’s basketball coaches at public HBCUs.

The review contains data on both base and total compensation. Base compensation is defined as the total public funds that the head coach received during the 2006-2007 academic year. Total compensation includes any additional compensation from revenue generated through camps events, such as winning championships, and incentive bonuses, such as having an academically successful team, among other things.

The survey was sent to the human resource and athletic departments of HBCUs this past spring. Some of the coaches may have left since then, so remember this reflects coaches’ compensation during the 2006-07 year.

Men’s Basketball

Division I Analysis

Out of the 23 Division I HBCU men’s basketball head coaches, 19 responded for a response rate of 82.6 percent. The average salary was $100,746 and the median was $99,225. These coaches, on average, made nearly $30,000 less than the head coaches of HBCU Division I football teams. The highest base paid basketball coach was Tennessee State University’s Cyrus Alexander at $142,600, while the lowest paid was University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff’s Van Holt at $59,804.  However, after factoring in additional compensation, Coppin State University’s Ron Mitchell earned the most with $202,811.
