CIAA, Double the Pleasure for JCSU

The Johnson C. Smith University men’s basketball team, the Golden Bulls, seized their second consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) championship by defeating Virginia Union University 70-63 Saturday night at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C., before an overflow crowd.

In addition, Head Coach Vanessa Taylor and her Lady Golden Bulls captured their first title in four appearances in the 2009 Women’s Championship Game with a 49-36 victory over top seeded Bowie State University.

The CIAA Tournament is one of the largest and most financially successful basketball tournaments in the United States. Charlotte tourism officials said more than 181,000 fans attended events associated with last year’s tournament and spent $20.5 million.
