March Madness 2009’s Diversity in Leadership

This year’s 2009 NCAA Tournament field of 65 teams includes 14 teams that have Black head coaches. According to NCAA data, Black players represent approximately 60 percent of Division I male basketball players. Thirteen Black head coaches made it into the NCAA Tournament in 2006. Here is a list of Black head coaches who made it into this year’s March madness.

 

Midwest Regional

West Regional

University of Washington – Lorenzo Romar

 

University of  Missouri – Mike Anderson

 

California State Northridge – Bobby Braswell

 

South Regional

Clemson University – Oliver Purnell

 

University of Oklahoma – Jeff Capel

 

Morgan State University – Todd Bozeman

 

East Regional

Florida State University – Leonard Hamilton

 

Virginia Commonwealth University – Anthony Grant

 

University of Minnesota – Tubby Smith

 

Binghamton University – Kevin Broadus
