Gaston College is bringing back sports for the first time in 50 years following a unanimous voted from the school’s Board of Trustees, WCNC reported.
Gaston will have five sports over the next two years: baseball, softball, e-sports, beach volleyball and men’s basketball.
Last year, Gaston College President Dr. John Hauser began announced that he would jumpstart sports at the school.
“It’s actually an ideal situation,” Hauser said about reestablishing sports at Gaston amid a pandemic, “because the opportunities are good to establish yourselves, get programs in place.”
Hauser has already a number of people to lead the revived athletics department: Gene Banks as athletic director; David “Dickey” Nutt as associate athletic director and head basketball coach; Shohn Doty as head baseball coach; and John Horshok as director of athletic program development and sports marketing.
Gaston cannot use state funds to compete on the junior college level. Therefore, the school will rely on fundraising, bookstore revenue and other fees, WCNC reported.
