ATLANTA ― Emory University’s law school has received $1.5 million to fund a professorship named after civil rights icon and U.S. Rep. John Lewis.
The school says the anonymous gift will be used to help establish a John Lewis Chair in Civil Rights and Social Justice. The law school will raise an additional $500,000 to fully fund the chair.
The Emory University School of Law plans to conduct a national search for a scholar to fill the position who has demonstrated a desire to promote the rule of law by studying civil rights.
Joella Hricik, Emory Law’s associate dean for development and alumni relations, says the anonymous donor thinks recent anniversaries of civil rights milestones make this an appropriate time to honor Lewis.
