Family Creates Endowed Scholarship for Claflin Biology Majors

Claflin University has established the Spencer and Rev. Minnie Anderson Endowed Scholarship Fund following the couple’s $20,000 gift to the university honoring the memory of their two sons, Michael Cutler and the Rev. Dr. Otis Cutler, Jr.

Michael and Otis died 28 days apart – Michael from a pulmonary embolism at the age of 48, and Otis from a rare form of brain cancer. The Anderson’s hope that Claflin students who receive an endowed scholarship continue their studies in medical school or participate in research that expands “the knowledge, treatment, or contribute to finding a cure for terminal illnesses,” according to the university.

Any student who is a biology major from South Carolina and maintains a 3.0 GPA will be eligible for the annual scholarship.

“Both Spencer and I believe science, research and preparing students for STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] careers are very important,” said Minnie Anderson. “This endowed scholarship helps preserve our memories of Michael and Otis and helps us to move forward in a meaningful way. The scholarship will also bring increased awareness for medical research and address health-related issues.”

The Anderson’s added that the scholarship fund reflects their family’s passion for helping young people. A third son, Mark Cutler, continues the vision of service he shared with his brothers, the university said.

Claflin president Dr. Henry N. Tisdale welcomed the endowment gift during the Anderson’s check presentation. With plans to retire on June 30, 2019, Tisdale reaffirmed his commitment to raising scholarship funds for students.

“We thank you and your families for your commitment to Claflin,” Tisdale said. “I am committed to increasing scholarships and endowments in my final year as we continue to support our high-achieving scholars and help them remain in school.”
