MICHAEL KIM
MICHAEL KIM has been named director of the School of Music at the University of Minnesota, effective July 31. He is acting associate vice president (external) and dean of the School of Music at Brandon University. Kim earned a bachelor’s from the University of Calgary, and a master’s and a doctorate from The Juilliard School.

LORNA LE’ANNE SHAW-BERBICK
LORNA LE’ANNE SHAW-BERBICK has been appointed dean of the university at Kentucky State University. She was dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at the College of Saint Rose. Shaw-Berbick earned two bachelor’s and a master’s from the University of the West Indies, and a doctorate from Howard University.

The Music Lives On
With the death of B.B. King, “the blues has lost its king, and America has lost a legend,” President Barack Obama said in a letter read at the famed guitarist’s funeral on Saturday, May 30, in his hometown of Indianola, Mississippi. King, the son of sharecroppers, died on May 14 at the age of 89, leaving a rich legacy as an innovator and hard-working performer.

National Poetry Month, which organizers say is the largest literary celebration in the world, is observed throughout April. The Academy of American Poets inaugurated the month in 1996. Tens of millions of people participate, according to the academy, as schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers and poets offer readings, festivals and workshops.

ARNOLD HOLLAND
ARNOLD HOLLAND has been appointed interim associate dean of the College of the Arts at California State University, Fullerton. He was an associate professor and program coordinator of graphic design at Cal State Fullerton. He holds a bachelor’s from Arizona State University, a master’s from Virginia Commonwealth University and a doctorate from Cal State Fullerton.
