Moving Beyond Hispanic Enrolling While Becoming Hispanic Serving at William Paterson University
The shift in our student population revealed structural and pedagogical concerns that led to the development of several task forces aimed at addressing and understanding how to better serve our increasingly diverse student population. Among them was the HSI task force, who among others, received charges by our University President, Richard Helldobler, asking us to recommend ways and strategies that our higher education institution could move beyond being a Hispanic enrolling institution towards becoming a Hispanic Serving one.

Diverse: Issues In Higher Education and Excelencia in Education have partnered to exclusively release names of the institutions that have earned the 2020 Seal of Excelencia, a national certification that confirms an institution goes beyond enrollment to intentionally serve Latino students. California State University, Sacramento, one of the five institutions to earn the 2020 Seal of Excelencia, has changed the trajectories of many Latinx families by creating programs to serve students who often have no support.

A Question of Identity: Examining Use of the Term ‘Latinx’
In academic and student activist circles, many have adopted the term “Latinx” as a gender-neutral and gender non-binary inclusive replacement for Latino or Latina. The word — which made its debut in Merriam-Webster’s dictionary in 2018 — is increasingly popular among scholars, with universities like Harvard, Yale and others offering Latinx studies programs. But only 3% of U.S. Hispanics actually use the term, according to a Pew Research Center study in August.

No Justice, No Peace: How to Come to Terms with Your Own Anti-Blackness
Handcuffed, forcefully pinned down on the asphalt, backed by the heavy weight of a body, knee pressed up against the neck, slowly depriving him of life–George Floyd–gasped for air. Uttering what would become some of his last words, “I can’t move…mama…mama…I can’t breathe.” Floyd was murdered that day at the hands of a white police officer while three others watched.
