University of Vermont to Cut 23 College of Arts and Sciences Programs

The University of Vermont (UVM) is slated to slash 23 programs in the College of Arts and Sciences in an effort to cut costs, VTDigger reported.

The University Of Vermont E1607112925535The decision has been discussed over “the last several years,” according to UVM Provost and Senior Vice President Dr. Patricia Prelock. The majors and minors will be phased out gradually, and students currently in the programs may still complete their degrees.

UVM will remove its geology, religion and classics departments. Some departments will be combined. A School of the Arts will incorporate the former art and art history, music, and theatre and dance departments. A School of Languages will consolidate Asian languages and literatures, German and Russian, and romance languages and cultures.

In past years, the college – which serves 4,500 of UVM’s total 12,000 students– has had budget shortfalls and declining enrollment.
