HSIs Receive New Federal Grants

HSIs Receive New Federal GrantsMore than 30 Hispanic-serving institutions will receive new federal grants to promote improvements in programs and facilities.
Overall, 33 colleges and universities will receive the new grants under the Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) program in Title V of the Higher Education Act. Twenty-one institutions will receive five-year development grants to increase community outreach and school partnerships, start new programs and purchase telecommunications equipment.
An additional 12 institutions will receive five-year cooperative development grants allowing HSIs to partner with other colleges on services and programming.
Another 157 HSIs with prior-year grants will get continuation funds this fall, the Education Department says. To qualify as an Hispanic-serving institution a college or university must have enrollment that is at least 25 percent Hispanic. Fifty percent of Hispanic students also must qualify as low income.
