The Art Center College of Design (Calif.) has been awarded a $75,000 Architectural Conservation Grant from the Getty Foundation, the philanthropic division of the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles, to support conservation planning for the Craig Ellwood building, located at the Art Center’s Hillside Campus.
The California State University, Northridge Cinema and Television Arts Department received $89,080 from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The gift will be used to finance a state-of-the-art edit suite as well as maintain the projector in CSUN’s Alan and Elaine Armer Theater. The remaining $50,000 will support the university’s Hollywood Foreign Press Association Fellows program, which funds senior film projects that are required for graduation.
Clark Atlanta University (Ga.) received a $2.5 million grant from The National Institutes of Health for biomedical research to help increase the number of minorities in the field. The grant will allow faculty members to engage in cutting-edge research that will offer new experiences and perspectives to incorporate into their teaching.
The Cleveland Institute of Music (Ohio) received a $25,000 grant from the Key Foundation for the institute’s “Strengthening Academic and Professional Proficiencies through Distance Learning Technology” program.
The College of New Rochelle (N.Y.) School of Nursing received a $25,465 grant from The Promise of Nursing for New School Grant Program administered by the Foundation of the National Student Nurses Association. The funds will be used to improve student retention and nursing exam pass rates by enhancing student learning through the purchase and use of advanced multimedia learning tools.
George Mason University (Va.) has been awarded $25 million from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for construction of a Regional Biocontainment Laboratory at its Prince William campus in Manassas. This is the largest research award in the university’s history.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology received a grant of nearly $200,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women. This grant will allow MIT to improve its policies, programs and services related to issues of sexual assault and dating and domestic violence.
Moraine Valley Community College (Ill.) received a $104,715 grant from the Illinois Community College Board to fund the college’s Jump Start program designed to help high school students with a 2.5 grade point average or better get a head start on their college education by enrolling in one college-level class.
The New England Conservatory Performance Outreach Fellowship Ensembles program received a grant of $300,000 from five-time Grammy winner Billy Joel to support performances for underserved audiences and give young musicians new performing opportunities. Named the Billy Joel Performance Outreach Endowment Fund, the gift will support the training, transportation and honoraria for about 20 students to stage 40 free community concerts each academic year.
Norfolk State University (Va.) received a $247,637 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support improvements in math and science programs.
North Carolina A&T State University received a $250,000 grant from the Land Grant University in Research Ethics funded by the National Science Foundation. The grant is designed to help establish a comprehensive, interdisciplinary interinstitutional program to teach research ethics to graduate students.
The University of Arkansas Medical Sciences received a four-year $2.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study obesity and diabetes. Scientists hope to identify the cellular mechanisms that cause a pre-diabetic condition and the development of Type II diabetes.
The University of Florida College of Engineering received a $1,025,000 grant from the Harris Corp., a communications equipment company headquartered in Melbourne, Fla. The gift will be used to endow multiple professorships in UF’s engineering program.
The University of Hawaii Pacific Business Center Program received $250,000 from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs to improve the level of private sector-led economic development in the U.S. insular areas. These areas consist of American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, the Republics of Palau and the Marshall Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The University of Memphis received a five-year, $5 million grant from FedEx Corp. to support the work of the University of Memphis’ FedEx Institute of Technology. The money will help build the infrastructure for conducting key research, facilitate the recruitment of new faculty members, and support Institute initiatives such as its Vision Speakers Series and a residency program for innovators, artists and CEOs.
