University of Illinois Faculty: Reconsider Professor’s Job

URBANA, Ill. ― A committee of University of Illinois faculty members is recommending that the school reconsider its decision to rescind a job once offered to a Native American studies professor.

The committee was asked to review the situation involving Steven Salaita. He was offered a job earlier this year at the Urbana-Champaign campus but had the offer rescinded after he wrote a series of profane, anti-Israel Twitter messages that angered some financial donors.

The News-Gazette in Champaign reported Tuesday that the Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure wrote in the recently released report that they do not believe Salaita’s messages made him unfit to teach at the university.

Neither campus administration nor an attorney for Salaita immediately responded to requests for comment.

The committee investigates alleged violations of academic freedom.
