Valerie-SmithVALERIE SMITH has been appointed president of Swarthmore College, effective July 1. She is currently dean of the college and a professor of literature and African-American studies at Princeton University. Smith earned a bachelor’s from Bates College, and a master’s and a doctorate from the University of Virginia.
