A union representing faculty at 14 state universities remains at odds with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education over a new contract.
The two sides have been unable to reach an agreement on salaries, health insurance and faculty workloads.
The Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties represents about 5,500 faculty and coaches at universities that include Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Shippensburg and West Chester universities, among others.
Members have been working under contracts that expired June 30 of last year.
The union has authorized its representatives to call a strike if needed, but talks are continuing.
The university system says a strike would halt classes for more than 100,000 students but the schools would remain open. The union says its goal is still to reach a contract.
