College Board Approves Jackson State Degree Programs

JACKSON, Miss. ― The state Board College has approved four new degree programs at Jackson State University.

The programs will be offered beginning this fall.

The College Board approved this past week doctorate programs in engineering and in computational and data-enabled science and engineering. The board approved bachelor of science programs in biomedical engineering and in statistics.

JSU President Carolyn W. Meyers says the bachelor’s degree program in biomedical engineering will be the only undergraduate program currently offered in the state.

“These new programs will enrich the inventory of academic offerings available to our students,” Meyers said in a statement.

The doctoral program in engineering will emphasize computer engineering, industrial engineering, electrical engineering, computational engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering and geological engineering.

“This new program should facilitate increased research conducted by our faculty and doctoral students,” said Dr. James C. Renick, provost and vice president for academic affairs.

The Computational and Data-Enabled Science & Engineering program includes the disciplines of biology, chemistry, computer engineering, computer science, civil and environmental engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials science and engineering, physics, mathematics, technology, public health, economics and finance.

The biomedical engineering program will train students in which labor statisticians say is the third-fastest growing occupation in the country.

The statistics program will train students to work in the data sciences and in government, business and industry jobs, said Dr. Richard Aló, dean of JSU’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology.

“The program provides students with a strong foundation in mathematical and statistical methodology,” Aló said. “The program will also prepare students for graduate training in statistics and related fields.”
