The Rutgers University Center for Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI) has published an infographic about trends across historically Black colleges and university (HBCU) presidents.
Approximately 56% have never worked outside of academic affairs. And the majority of current HBCU presidents, 72%, are in their first presidency.
“CMSI hosts the Minority Serving Institutions Aspiring Leaders Program, and as such, we’re always thinking about presidents – where they hail from, their areas of expertise, and their influences. This infographic is a fun depiction of HBCU presidents – their preparation and origins,” said Dr. Marybeth Gasman, CMSI executive director and Rutgers Samuel DeWitt Proctor Endowed Chair.
The most common position held before presidencies is vice provost for academic affairs or provost. And the average senior administration or cabinet tenure before assuming a presidency is four years.
The infographic also shows other information, including average time in higher ed before being president; presidents alma maters; and schools educating the most presidents.
