Dr. LaVar J. Charleston, an alumnus of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been tapped to serve as the school’s first associate dean for diversity and inclusion. He will begin in his new post on June 16, 2019.
Charleston, who is currently the assistant vice chancellor of student diversity, engagement, and success at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, will provide leadership to faculty, staff, and students in developing and implementing strategic initiatives that promote the School of Education and UW-Madison’s mission for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
“We are thrilled that Dr. Charleston is joining the School of Education as the inaugural associate dean for diversity and inclusion,” says Dr. Diana Hess, dean of the School of Education and the Karen A. Falk Distinguished Chair of Education. “He is a dynamic and thoughtful leader with just the right mix of extensive experience and exceptiona skills to lead the development of the new office of Diversity and Inclusion.”
From 2012 to 2017, Charleston worked as an assistant director and senior research associate at the Wisconsin’s Equity and Inclusion Laboratory (WeiLab), which promotes equity in higher education.
