Paula GiddingsNext month, Prairie View A&M University will host a day-long symposium honoring African American writer and historian Paula Giddings on the 35th anniversary of her book When and Where I Enter, which traces the legacy of Black women activists. At the event on Nov. 8, scholars will discuss and celebrate the study of Black women’s history.
A morning panel will feature feminist icon and journalist Gloria Steinem, Rev. Dr. Renita J. Weems, Black women’s history scholar Dr. Elsa Barkley Brown, and African American literary studies scholar Dr. Cheryl Wall. The group plans to discuss the history of Black women’s studies.
Giddings herself will participate in a panel with Steinem and Spelman College Professor Dr. Beverly Guy-Sheftall. Poet Dr. Evie Shockley, who has been influenced by Gidding’s work, will also share poetry.
The event will end with a discussion between Giddings and Prairie View A&M University President Dr. Ruth J. Simmons.
